KHONGWATMAI TIES FOR SECOND AT INTERNATIONAL SERIES SINGAPORE; REED WITH ACE

Written by STAFF AND NEWS REPORTS

Thailand’s Phachara Khongwatmai tied for second in Sunday’s final round of the International Series Singapore, while American Patrick Reed posted the third hole-in-one of his tournament career.

Khongwatmai’s 1-under 71 left him at 15 under, one stroke behind winner – and fellow countryman – Nitithorn Thippong. Bogeys at the 12th and 15th holes proved costly for Khongwatmai, who entered the final round at Tenah Merah Country Club as the co-leader with Gavin Green.

It was Khongwatmai’s second runner-up result in the three International Series events this year, the elevated series supported by LIV Golf on the Asian Tour. In March, he finished solo second in the International Series Thailand.

The International Series now moves to Korea for this week's event at Lotte Skyhill Country Club Jeju on Aug. 18-21.

Of the 22 LIV golfers in the field, 16 made the cut. Japan’s Ryosuke Kinoshita and American Peter Uihlein joined Khongwatmai in the top 10, finishing in a five-way tie for seventh at 12 under.

Turk Pettit shot an 8-under 64 on Sunday, tying for low round of the week, to share 12th in a group that also included Sadom Kaewkanjana and Kevin Yuan.

Reed, the top-ranked player in the field, closed with his best round of the week, a 67, which was helped by his ace at the par-3 14th. He finished 8 under and in a tie for 31st.

“A lot of ups, and a lot of downs today,” Reed said of his round. “It was weird, it was one of those days when I did not hit the ball well. I decided to leave the pin out of the hole on the third, because I don’t like to have the pin in when I putt, and I go ahead and hole the putt and I think OK. Had as shorty on 13 which I missed, then I go ahead and make a hole-in-one on 14. So, it was just one of those days.

“I was actually between eight and nine on 14, we had 171, we were trying to figure out what way the wind was doing, so I hit a soft eight, and it never left the flag stick. That’s my third in tournaments, and the biggest one being right here as it kind of got the momentum going because it was really rough early on. Needed something to spark the round.”

One of his previous aces came at the 2020 U.S. Open.

Reed, appropriately enough, is a member of 4 Aces GC, which has won the team competition at the last two LIV Golf Invitational events.
