Format
Foursomes matches involve two-man teams playing one ball per hole, with teammates alternating shots until each hole is complete. Players also alternate tee shots, with one leading off on odd-numbered holes and the other leading off on even-numbered holes. The team with the low score on each hole wins the hole. If their scores are tied, the hole is halved.
Fourballs matches involve each member of a two-man team playing his own ball, so four balls are in play on every hole. Each team counts the lowest of its two scores on each hole, and the team whose player has the lowest score wins the hole. If the low scores are tied, the hole is halved.
Singles matches feature one player from each team. The player with the lower score on each hole wins that hole. If their scores are tied, the hole is halved.
Schedule
Day 1 (Sept. 26): 8 matches – 4 Foursomes, 4 Fourballs – involving two-man partnerships representing each team.
Day 2 (Sept. 27): 8 matches – 4 Foursomes, 4 Fourballs – involving two-man partnerships representing each team.
Day 3 (Sept. 28): 12 matches of Singles with players going head-to-head.
Points: Each match is worth one point. There are no extra holes in Ryder Cup matches. Should the two sides be tied after 18 holes, each side earns a half-point.
Winning total: To win the Ryder Cup outright, a team must earn 14.5 of the 28 points available. In the case of a 14-14 tie, Europe would retain the Ryder Cup as the reigning title holders.
History
The Ryder Cup was first held in 1927 in Worcester, Massachusetts, with the United States beating the team from Great Britain, 9.5 – 2.5. This year’s event will be the 45th edition of the Ryder Cup.
From 1927-1977, the Ryder Cup consisted of players from the United States versus a team from Great Britain, then later Great Britain & Ireland. A total of 22 Ryder Cups were played during those 50 years, with the U.S. winning 18 times, Great Britain winning 3 times, and one tie (USA retaining the Cup in 1969).
Beginning in 1979, players from Continental Europe were eligible to participate, with the Great Britain & Ireland team renamed as Team Europe. Since then, 22 more Ryder Cups have been played, with Europe winning 12 times, USA winning 9 times, and one tie (Europe retaining the Cup in 1989).
