HOW TO ENJOY A LIV GOLF EVENT
Written by LIV GOLF STAFF
Attending a LIV Golf event provides an experience unlike any other regular tournament. While watching 48 of the world’s best golfers remains the centerpiece, our goal at LIV is simple: We want you to have a blast.
From the Fan Village to the Shotgun Start to the Après Golf activities, things are different at LIV Golf. All players start at the same time. The team component produces added drama. Fans can get up-close to players instead of feeling packed into tight galleries. Music is pumped throughout the host venue. Hence our motto: Golf, But Louder!
There are many ways to enjoy the LIV Golf experience. For those planning to attend, here’s a roadmap to make the most out of your day.
GATES OPEN; FUN BEGINS
The gates open three hours before the start of each round. That means 10 a.m. local time for a 1 p.m. start. It also means you can show up in the afternoon and still catch all the action – but there’s plenty to do before tee time. Oh, and if you’re concerned about the cost of parking, don’t be. It’s free.
The first place to start is the Fan Village. It’s the pre-round hub. Get acquainted with all the activities … and there are a ton of them.
Golf, of course, is at our core. But whether you’re a scratch golfer or have never gripped a club, you’ll enjoy stops such as our Chipping Challenge (hitting approach shots on a high-tech adjustable sloping lie), Neon Golf (think glow-in-the-dark mini-golf) and our Long Putt contest. Be one of the few to find the bottom of the cup.
If you’ve brought the kids (and you should – tickets are complimentary for youth 15 and under when accompanied by an adult), then they’ll enjoy the indoor Kids Zone. Plenty of games to play, including LIV Metaverse and gaming station.
Meanwhile, adults will appreciate the Eco Village. You can recharge your phone (better be ready to pedal a bike!), refill your water bottle, watch a 3D printer make tees out of recycled plastic, and participate in our chipping contest to raise money for local charities.
At some point, you’ll get hungry. Don’t worry: the food options are plentiful, and local. Food trucks provide a wide variety of choices, and local beers are available for those who want to go beyond the standard fare.
One other tip – visit the merchandise tent early. That way, you’ll get a chance to see the wide selection of apparel. Caps and T-shirts of our most popular teams get snapped up rather quickly.
TIME TO WARM UP
The beauty of the Shotgun Start is not only do players tee off at the same time, they also practice at the same time. Approximately 60-90 minutes before each round, you can catch the pros either on the range or the practice green. The music provides a festive atmosphere as players limber up and interact with their teammates. It’s a mix of smiles and game faces.
And if you have Club 54 access … even better. There’s a specific temperature-controlled hospitality area adjacent to the range with food and beverage. Enjoy a glass of champagne as you watch Bryson DeChambeau and Dustin Johnson crank out yardage-shattering practice drives.
If the kids want an autograph of their favorite players, find the entry points to the practice area. Many players will stop along the way to sign a pin flag or cap.
As tee time approaches, the loudspeaker message will alert the players and caddies to head to their carts for transport to their starting holes. Take the opportunity think about your viewing strategy once play begins.
GETTING DOWN TO BUSINESS
The first tee balls are struck at 1:15 p.m. local time. But you’ll want to be settled in 15 minutes prior to that, as members of the Frog-X Navy Seal Parachute Team skydives onto the course to kick off the action. It’s a great way to kick off each round.
Another helpful tip to enjoy the competition – know the storylines. Plenty of storylines exist inside those ropes each day!
If the first three LIV Golf events have shown us, players with major cred are good bets to handle the individual trophy. The first three winners have included two major champions (Charl Schwartzel and Henrik Stenson) along with the holder of the lowest round in major championship history (Branden Grace).
So, is it somebody else’s turn now, like major winners Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, Patrick Reed, Brooks Koepka or Phil Mickelson? Or maybe one of the young stars will rise up, such as Matthew Wolff, among a dozen players in their 20s.
Meanwhile, the team element takes the drama up a notch. Dustin’s 4 Aces GC have claimed the last two team titles. Since a lineup switch, they’ve been unbeatable. But Majesticks GC made them sweat in the last event, and Sergio Garcia’s Fireballs GC have, well, been on fire lately. Every score in every round could have an impact on the outcome, so keep a close eye on the team standings while checking out the video leaderboards.
Once play begins, you can follow your favorite player or members of your favorite team, giving yourself a chance to soak up the championship course and its layout … or you can pick out a spot at one of the holes and watch groups as they come through. Enjoy the music being played from speakers at various tee boxes and greens.
Another option is to head to the Birdie Shack. Open to all fans, it provides a prime viewing spot with a party vibe. An excellent place to hang out.
Club 54 holders can check out the action from multiple hospitality tents, and the Fan Village remains open, with plenty of places to relax or enjoy an afternoon snack.
The round generally ends before 6 p.m. local time. But the entertainment continues. Our Après Golf includes free concerts with top-name performers at every event. The stage setup is near the Fan Village; you can’t miss it.
The final round, of course, determines the individual champion as well as the team winner. The top three individual performers and their caddies are recognized on the podium. Then the four members of the winning team and their caddies take the stage, spraying each other with champagne. Stand close enough to the stage and you might get a drop or two from the winner’s bottles.
Afterwards, the celebration continues with the final concert of the week from a headliner act. In Boston, it’s 11-time Grammy-nominated artist Diplo on the Sunday stage (and don’t miss Saturday’s concerts with St. Lucia after the round and Dalton and the Gang starting things off before play begins).
It’s been a full day. But a rewarding one. It’s the most unique experience in golf. Loud indeed.
