The 2011 Masters champion then dropped back-to-back bogeys on the ninth and 10th holes. In the end, Schwartzel struggled to a 3-over 75 on a tough opening day at Augusta National.
“Yeah, course is tough. It's firm,” Schwartzel said. “There was a few tough pin placements. Didn't really feel like I played that badly. You know, didn't make enough key 12-footers. I had a few opportunities on 12-footers and missed.”

Round 1: Cameron Smith’s opening round at the Masters was a bit of a roller coaster. He traded two birdies for two bogeys on the front nine to make the turn at even par, then added one more birdie and three bogeys on the back nine. Smith's terrific putting was on full display on firm and fast conditions throughout the round. In the end, the Australian carded a 2-over 74.
"I'm definitely not out of the tournament," Smith said. "You know, like I said it was scratchy today but I feel like I did a pretty good job of getting the most out of it ... I didn't feel that great. It was bad to be honest. I did a good job hanging in there, so still in the tournament."
