How LIV Golf players fared in Rd. 2 at Masters
AUGUSTA, Ga. - Friday at the Masters saw everything from players charging up the leaderboard to others scrambling to make the cut. When it came to the 10 LIV Golf players in the field, they experienced a bit of both.
Five LIV Golf players made the cut at Augusta National, led by Legion XIII star Tyrrell Hatton, who shot a remarkable 6-under 66 to sit tied for seventh. The others who made the cut were Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Sergio Garcia and Charl Schwartzel.
The LIV Golf players who missed the cut were Bryson DeChambeau, Bubba Watson, Cameron Smith, Tom McKibbin and Carlos Ortiz.
Here's a look at how each player performed in Round 2.
MADE THE CUT
TYRRELL HATTON, LEGION XIII
Rd. 2 score: 6-under 66 (4-under total)
Round 2: Tyrrell Hatton put together an incredibly impressive round, hitting all 18 greens in regulation on the way to firing a 6-under 66 to stand T7 entering the weekend. The Legion XIII star posted the most birdies he’s ever made in a major championship with seven (his previous best was six). His score of 66 was two shots better than his previous best round at Augusta National.
"I gave myself lots of opportunities," Hatton said. "I would have liked to have seen more putts go in. I don't feel like I actually holed that many putts certainly outside sort of 7, 8 feet. Hopefully I can do a bit better on that front over the weekend, but overall it was a good day."
DUSTIN JOHNSON, 4ACES GC
Rd. 2 score: 1-under 71 (Even-par total)
Round 2: Dustin Johnson continued to ride a hot putter, gaining more than two strokes on the field in Round 2 to shoot a 1-under 71. He made the cut for the second time in his last five majors. The 4Aces GC captain enters the weekend in the top 25 of the leaderboard.
SERGIO GARCIA, FIREBALLS GC
Rd. 2 score: 3-over 75 (3-over total)
Round 2: Sergio Garcia posted a 3-over 75 in the second round to sit at 3 over for the tournament. He was going along nicely at 1 over prior to making a double bogey after and errant drive on the par-4 17th. The 2017 Masters champion finished inside the cut line and will make the weekend for just the second time in eight tries since his victory.
JON RAHM, LEGION XIII
Rd. 2 score: 2-under 70 (4-over total)
Round 2: After not making a single birdie in Rd. 1, Jon Rahm opened his round with birdies on holes 2 and 5 on his way to a 2-under 70. Although he had higher hopes entering the week, he made the cut on the number with a 4-over total.
"I felt really good all year besides yesterday," Rahm said. "I actually felt pretty good today as well. Yesterday was just an anomaly where everything that could go wrong went wrong. Not that I shot myself out of the tournament but I'm going to need an absolute miracle starting today, and didn't quite do enough. I'm going to need a heck of a round tomorrow to give myself a chance and even then, might be a little too far away."
CHARL SCHWARTZEL, SOUTHERN GUARDS GC
Rd. 2 score: 1-over 73 (4-over total)
Round 2: Charl Schwartzel shot a 1-over 73 to sit at 4 over through two rounds to make the cut on the number. On Friday, he made five birdies but also had one double bogey and four bogeys.
"A lot of up and down," Schwartzel said. "Made five birdies today. But, yeah, gave away too many shots. Yeah, more than yesterday. Today was poor mistakes and can't really afford to do that around here."
MISSED THE CUT
BRYSON DECHAMBEAU, CRUSHERS GC
Rd. 2 score: 2-over 74 (6-over total)
Round 2: Bryson DeChambeau began the 18th hole at 1 under for his round and 3 over for the tournament, safely inside the cut line. Disaster struck for the Crushers GC captain, as he made a mess of the hole, eventually tapping in for a triple-bogey seven. His score dropped to 6 over and he missed the cut for just the third time in his last 12 major championships.
BUBBA WATSON, RANGEGOATS GC
Rd. 2 score: 1-over 73 (5-over total)
Round 2: Bubba Watson was 3 over at the turn but staged a strong back-nine rally with four birdies and one bogey to sit at 4 over for the tournament, which hovered aroung the cut line.
On the final hole, Watson left himself a 15-foot putt for par, which just slid by. The RangeGoats GC captain finished at 5 over and missed the cut by one shot.
TOM MCKIBBIN, LEGION XIII
Rd. 2 score: 4-over 76 (7-over total)
Round 2: Tom McKibbin was the first LIV Golf player to tee off for Rd. 2 and struggled once again. He shot a 4-over 76 with a double bogey on the second, leading to a missed cut. The Northern Irishman played his second nine at even par and will gain valuable experience from his first trip around Augusta National.
When asked about gaining experience at Augusta National, McKibbin said: "The more times you can play, especially on the greens. I think the greens are obviously the trickiest part, and I had sort of a lot of putts the first two days as the course changes so much from the practice days. (Thursday) was a little bit of guesswork, maybe."
CAMERON SMITH, RIPPER GC
Rd. 2 score: 5-over 77 (7-over total)
Round 2: Cameron Smith entered the day in position to make the cut but shot a 5-over 77 to finish at 7 over for the tournament. The Ripper GC captain has now missed the cut in six consecutive major championships.
CARLOS ORTIZ, TORGUE GC
Rd. 2 score: 3-over 75 (11-over total)
Round 2: Carlos Ortiz had a better day than yesterday but still shot a 3-over 75 to finish his tournament at 11 over. He will miss the cut for the second time in two tries at the Masters. The Mexican will next tee it up at LIV Golf Mexico City in front of his home fans.
