When you think of South Africa, you think BIG, right? Big safaris, big steaks, and of course, big golf courses.
Steyn City is golf in XXL. Stretching across an estate two-and-a-half times the size of New York’s Central Park, the course spans over 7,700 yards and every corner has been meticulously crafted by the great Jack Nicklaus.
With Impala and Springbok roaming the property, the course is African right down to the bed of the Jukskei River which flows through it. And so it’s the perfect place to host LIV Golf’s first-ever event on the African continent, where Stinger GC will host the League’s 12 other teams.
Now let’s take a closer look at this amazing venue, and look ahead to the challenges it will create for some of the world’s best players when they arrive in March 2026.
What happened before LIV Golf got here?
Some golf courses have evolved over decades, driven forward by various different people at different times. Others owe their existence to one inspired individual, with the vision and resources to create an entire estate from scratch.
Steyn City? It’s in the second group.
The property was conceived by the late South African billionaire Douw Steyn, who had created a multi-national insurance empire and wanted to build a legacy in the country of his birth. Steyn purchased a quarry in Johannesburg’s northern suburbs and in tandem with masterplanner Giuseppe Plumari, began to create a “city within a city.”
The estate is now home to hundreds of people, and boasts cobbled streets and piazzas as well as a central park. There are all kinds of amenities, too, including a massive lagoon for watersports, an off-road cycle track and a series of pods dedicated to South Africa's favorite pastime: the weekly barbecue, or braai.
And the golf course? That’s the crown jewel, home to some of the most beautiful features on the entire estate. There’s a creek, an inland dam and a series of canyons fashioned from the old quarry. You can stand on the first tee and drink in an unmistakably African panorama, with parkland stretching for miles around, and as you walk round the course you’ll cross the river on several holes.
The course opened its doors in 2014, and recognition was quick to arrive. Steyn City has hosted events on the Sunshine Tour and DP World Tour, and now, it's getting global lift-off.
How will it play?
One word: Tough.
The Nicklaus design team methodically placed 75 bunkers around the property, and there’s plenty of water in play. Length off the tee will be a factor, notably on the 650-yard 5th hole.
On the other hand, the fairways are pretty wide, and the bentgrass greens should help the players when putting.
If we had to pick out one hole that could decide the destiny of the titles, it would be the 7th, where a wandering stream is waiting to gobble any wayward tee shots.
Who will it favor?
The length of the course, and the altitude - Steyn City is located at around 1350 meters (nearly 4,500 feet) above sea level - should play into the hands of the bigger drivers. But a lot will depend on the weather, and the crowd: South African fans love bringing the noise, and now they can cheer Louis Oosthuizen’s Stingers in their first-ever home game.
We’ve already seen Ripper GC win LIV Golf Adelaide and Fireballs GC win LIV Golf Andalucía. Could Stingers become the latest LIV Golf team to win on their home turf? You wouldn’t count it out, would you.
How can I be there?
