Team Championship Format

A Format Built For Drama

Twelve teams start the weekend. One will be left holding the gold. The LIV Golf Team Championship brings drama every single day, and here’s how it all works.

The Play-In

For 2026, we’ve introduced an extra, preliminary stage of drama: the play-in, where the bottom two teams in the regular-season table will meet to decide which team makes the weekend - and which misses out altogether.

The play-in will be streamed live on the LIV Golf App, so you get an extra dose of knockout golf before Championship weekend.

Three Days. One Champion.

Quarter-finals, semi-finals, and finally a decisive clash between the top three times on Championship Sunday. The losing teams continue to play one another, which means they can win extra prize money - and fans get to see all their favorite players throughout the weekend.

For the first two days of the weekend, it’s matchplay: team vs team, every hole win or lose. If you love your drama, this is like having play-offs all over the course.

Then, on Sunday, it’s back to classic strokeplay. All the teams are competing alone: in other words, they’re trying to build their own score, and the team with the best final total wins. Every player’s score counts towards his team’s performance, and we won’t know the winner until all 18 holes are done.

The format creates the best of both worlds: the instant drama of matchplay, followed by a nerve-shredding final round as fortunes twist and turn, heroes rise and fall, and the leaderboard keeps shifting until one final team claims the winners’ rings.
