Quick look at the LIV Golf players at this weekend’s U.S. Open

OAKMONT, Pa. – Six LIV Golf players are vying for the U.S. Open trophy this weekend at Oakmont. Here’s a look at each one heading into Saturday’s third round.

BROOKS KOEPKA (+2, T8)

  • The Smash GC captain is seeking his sixth major and third U.S. Open title, having won back-to-back in 2017-18
  • His most recent major victory, the 2023 PGA Championship, was the first won by an active LIV Golf player
  • Won three of his first five majors after overcoming multi-shot deficits after 36 holes; he’ll start Saturday five strokes off the lead
  • Shot a first-round 68 thanks to five up-and-downs on seven missed greens but was just 2-of-9 in scrambling on his second-round 74
  • Gained 1.87 strokes on approach Friday but was -1.02 in putting

TYRRELL HATTON (+3, T12)

  • The Legion XIII star is seeking his first major title; he’s had six top 10s in his first 40 major starts
  • His best major result is a tie for fifth at the 2016 Open at Royal Troon, and his best U.S. Open result is a tie for sixth at Shinnecock Hills in 2018
  • Shot a second-round even-par 70 – just seven players produced better scores on Friday.
  • Gained 3.09 strokes against the field around the greens in the second round, the third best performance in the field
  • Ranks T5 in Greens in Regulation through two rounds at 72%

CARLOS ORTIZ (+3, T12)

  • The Torque GC veteran is seeking his first major title in his 10th career major start; earned a start this week through final qualifying
  • His tie for 12th is his best position after any of his 24 career major rounds
  • He leads the field through two rounds in Greens in Regulation, hitting 78% (28 of 36); the field average is 55%
  • Ranked last in the field in strokes gained putting in the first round (-3.82) but gained 2.1 strokes in putting in the second round

JON RAHM (+4, T23)

  • The Legion XIII captain is seeking his third major title and second U.S. Open win after winning in 2021
  • Won the season-long Individual Championship last year in his first season with LIV Golf and also claimed two tournament titles
  • Led the field in strokes gained off the tee in round one (+3.35)
  • Ranks fourth in the field this week in strokes gained approach, gaining 2.68 strokes per round; gained 3.17 strokes in that category on Friday
  • Ranks sixth in the field in driving distance with a 322.8 yard average on the measured holes
  • Lost 2.63 strokes to the field in putting on Friday after missing six putts between 5-10 feet

MARC LEISHMAN (+6, T45)

  • The Ripper GC veteran, in the field through final qualifying, made the cut for the 30th time in 45 career major starts
  • Has six top 10s in majors with a career-best finish of T2 at the 2015 Open when he lost in a playoff
  • Posted his first LIV Golf individual title earlier this year in Miami on a Doral course that was among the toughest in LIV Golf history
  • Was tied for 11th through two rounds at the 2016 U.S. Open at Oakmont, eventually finishing T18
  • Had an impressive putting round in his opening 1-over 71, gaining 3.91 strokes on the field in putting

PATRICK REED (+7, T57)

  • The 4Aces GC star is seeking his second major title after winning the Masters in 2018
  • Has now made the cut in 10 of his 11 U.S. Open starts, with a best finish of solo 4th in 2018 at Shinnecock Hills
  • In shooting rounds of 73-74, Reed made the cut on the number
  • Ranked 18th in strokes gained putting in round one (+2.03) but 115th in round two (-1.11)
